Leisure Sinks History – In the beginning

I am currently discovering the fascinating history of Leisure Sinks. Did you know they actually started as a small motor agents and repair business?

Noel Crowe and his 18 years old son from Long Eaton set up the company in 1926.It was a bold step as at the time motorised transport was just making appearance on Britain’s roads. By 1930 the company were manufacturing a number of automotive products under license  but it was a decline in the demand for driving control conversions sets that obliged Crowe to cast around for a new product.

Crowe decided that the market was right for the manufacture of stainless steel sinks, popular in America but virtually unknown in Britain at the start of the 1930′s. The company chose the brand name ‘Leizure’ and started manufacturing initially for the bar, catering and heavy duty sectors, gradually introducing models for the domestic market.

Stainless steel sinks and drainers quickly caught in in the years before the War, and Crowe’s next move was to pioneer the development of vitreous enameled steel basins in 1937. These were marked under the name ‘Culsynk’ and offered a cheaper alternative to stainless steel, which was still a fairly expensive commodity.
